Answer to your questions.

As many of you know, we have sold the Midvale studio to a pair of current students. The new owners are Shae Myers and Aly Jackson. They are very excited to be a part of the the Adult Dance and Fitness family.

I sold the studio to these ladies mainly because the commute was pretty intense. It takes an hour and half each way and it was wearing on my family. I am getting married on December 30th and I have a 5 year old daughter. I want to start off the New Year on the right foot and put my family first :)

I will still own, operate, and teach at the Ogden studio.

Here are a few questions I have run into from current students of the Midvale location:

Q: What will happen to my membership?
A: Your membership will continue as normal at the same great price. All existing members can still attend classes at both studio's until the time that thier membership expires. At that time, you will need to either commit to Ogden or Midvale.

Q: What will the studio be called?
A: Same name, just different owners. Pearl by Adult Dance & Fitness

Q: How will I schedule my classes for the Midvale location?
A: The Midvale location will have a separate website as of December 23rd. You will be able to find a link to this website from the Ogden website and this blog.

Q: Will I ever get over the separation anxiety?
A: Yes! The average students won't know a difference. In fact, the new owners plan to do a remodel and make the classes and the building more functional.

Q: Will the pricing and promotions be the same for both studio's?
A: No. This is not becoming a franchise. They will be two separate studio's and they will have pricing dependent upon the owners and the demand for classes. If you already have a membership, your price will continue at the rate until it expires. At that time, you can repurchase a new membership.

Q: When will the schedules and websites be split?
A: The schedules and websites will be split on December 23rd. Ogden location will be open for classes December 26th-30th. Midvale will be closed for these four days due to the remodel. I know it's a big break, but the Midvale students will greatly benefit from the physical changes that will be made during this time.

I have had dozens of e-mails from students expressing how much they will miss me. I am so flattered that I will be missed. I put alot of my emotions and thoughts into that studio and I am sad to see it go. But if I'm being honest, it will be managed much better than I was able to do it. The new owners are so excited to get to know all of the students and they are very eager to hear your questions, comments, and concerns.

I will always be at our Ogden location. Please come see me every once in a while, and I will make the trip to Midvale often for workshops, classes, and recitals.

If you have questions, send them to danceogden@gmail.com

Thank you for being understanding. These changes are going to be awesome!!!

APFA pole competition winners!

The American Pole Fitness Association hosted their first annual pole competition this past October and a local Utah woman won a few titles.

Zoraya Judd competed and won first runner up and was also given the title of "Pole Athlete of the Year". Zoraya lives in Utah with her husband and two boys. We love Zoraya because she was the winner of the first competition that Adult Dance and Fitness hosted in 2009. Since then, she has been taking the pole world by storm winning titles and traveling the world.

We still host competitions at the studio and I know that any one of our competitors are capable of greatness if given a platform to gain confidence and strength. That's why local studio's and competition's are so important for a dancers growth. I will continue to host quarterly competitions and who knows?.. Maybe we will find another Zoraya Judd or Becca Butcher one day.

Check out her APFA video below:

The APFA is a pole fitness association that invites all pole enthusiast to join free of charge. They will keep you up to date on National and World pole events and news. And, you also get a free APFA sticker for joining.

November availability updated

As you may have seen in previous posts, we need to limit our new memberships to avoid over crowded classes. We had 16 spots available for November. As of 11/15/2010, we only have 10 memberships left.

Remember, we will not be accepting new members during the month of December. If you want to dance with us during 2010, you need to get your membership a.s.a.p.

Our 3 month membership is on special for 2 for 1. When you split the cost with a friend, it's only $49.50/month per person for a short three month commitment. This is truly a great deal!!! This special is not available through our online store.

Pole dancing on the Trya Banks show!

Felix Cane was featured on the Tyra Banks show. What a great opportunity to showcase pole dancing as an art vs. stripping. Watch the short segment below to see what an incredible thing pole can be:

They got punked!

An intro to pole class usually consists of a warm up, basic technique discussion, a few spins, and maybe a short routine at the end. A pole studio called Choice Training decided to prank a bunch of new students in their intro to pole class. I feel so sorry for the women who thought this was an actual pole class!!!! Watch the whole thing. The last minute of the tape is priceless :)

Tip of the week

This tip of the week comes from our belly dancing instructor. Here, Amber explains how to do the Mayan:

1. Start by lifting your hip. Notice how the foot is raised on the same side as hip.

2. Push hip to side in a circular motion.

3. Drop hip.

4. Rotate over to other side and repeat.

Chair dancing in Midvale

Here is our chair dancing class that we've been working on for the month of November. There is still time to join in the class. It is held every Thursday 6-7pm.

*When I perform, I never know what to do with my face...notice the cheezy smile :)

Pole dance combinations class

I look forward to teaching this class every single week. In pole dance combinations, we teach you how to put moves together to music to create pole routines. This week, the dance was lyrical and slow. Next week, you can expect an up beat dance that will have your heart rate way way up!!!

Shay and Tiffany were kind enough to allow me to film them. Thank you so much!!! You guys did way awesome. Enjoy!

We are almost to capacity!

As you may have noticed, class sizes are very large. As a result, we are forced to move to a new system of limited memberships. We can only take new members when older memberships expire. Here are the projected memberhsip availability for the next four months:

November availability: 16 openings
December availability: 0 openings
January availability: 20 openings
February availability: 14 openings

If we reach capacity, potential students will be put on a waiting list until the next openings are available. I apologize for the inconvenience, but in order to keep the current members happy with managable class sizes, we need to limit the incoming members.

October student of the month!

Drum roll......

October student of the month for Ogden is Davina Wong!!!

Davina has been dancing at the studio for about a year. She has worked very hard at the aerial silks and has performed at several recitals and events. AND, this month, she became an official employee of the studio. I believe that the best students eventually make the best teachers and Davina is proof. Go Davina!

October student of the month for Midvale is Britney Breitweiser!!!

Britney has only been on the pole for a few short months but has already become amazing. She is planning to compete in December's pole competition in the advanced division. Britney and her friend Mckell also write a special blog that covers their journey's of learning how to pole dance. For her fast paced growth and her excitement about the studio, she has been named Midvale's student of the month.

November jazz routine

Watch this video to see the routine that the jazz class is working on for the month of November. It's a lyrical/chair routine that will be easy for everyone to learn. So come, dance, and have fun in our wonderful jazz class with teacher Devon Flint!

A gift

One of the teachers at the studio gave me a painting that she painted herself of a pole dancer. This gift has touched me so much and I have been showing it off all night! You can see the painting in person at the Ogden studio. I hung it up for all to enjoy.

Thank you so much Chantal!

2 for 1 sale!

For the month of November, our 3 month membership is on sale 2 for 1. Split the cost with a friend and it's only $49.50. Plus, you are only tied into a three month contract. Also, we will not be taking any new memberships in December. This is your last month to join until January! www.poledanceutah.com

However, you can only buy this special in person at either location.

Prodigy!

Every once in a while, a student steps into these doors and amazes me. This time however, it is two girls who have me blown away. Angie and Jessica are gymnists who found their way into the Midvale studio. One has the legs of a goddess and the other is super duper strong. They were in my intermediate class tonight after taking only one beginners class, and they soared through the material. Every move I threw at them, they conquered with ease on their first try.

I told both of them that they should take pole very seriously and do as well as they can. They could be very strong competitors at a national level in the very near future given the right training.

I am soooooo excited! Next time I see them I'm taking video :)

Pasties!

I'm trying to raise money for my hippie wedding :) I have some hand made pasties that I spent all day making and I'm selling them to help pay for our plane tickets to San Diego where we will be getting married in December. So, if you want to surprise your man, come grab a pair from either studio. They come in a cute bag for storage and the application glue is included. $10

Pole shorts are here!

We just got our first shipment of dance shorts that are perfect for pole dancers.

Wear them high on your waist

Side zipper that allows your shorts to roll down exposing more stomach only when you need it!

The material is very light weight and very breathable.

These pole shorts are available at both studio's as of November 4th.

Tip of the week

This aerial silk tip of the week comes from instructor Annie Dickson.

#1 For cosmetic and safety purposes, keep ankles in line with your body. Ankles should be straight and not sickled. This can cause unnecessary falls and it can make your moves look lazy.

#2 Attend open aerial whenever you get the chance. Just one hour of extra practice each week will allow you to progress much faster.

#3 Listen to your body! Don't do more than you are able. If your arms are too worn out, stop, climb down, and try it again in 10 minutes.

#4 When performing a routine, always use a crash mat! Even professional dancers miss steps and occaisionally have a big fall in front of a crowd. Safety should be number 1!

Thinking about joining?

As the owner of the studio, I know how excited women can get when they are getting ready to start taking pole or aerial classes. A lot of thought goes into taking the leap to becoming a pole or aerial student. But can I tell you a secret? It's not as scary as it may seem. The pole has been very sexually glorified but in the end, it is just a piece of metal that hangs from floor to ceiling. No big deal! I like to compare it to a horizontal ballet bar. Ballerina's use them right??!

We try to make our classes physically challenging and entertaining. You will feel somewhat sexy, but definately not stripper status. You will strictly be a pole fitness student. Your friends and family may disapprove, but they will secretly be a little jealous that you have the confidence and the curiosity to start something new.

Our aerial classes are so so fun! The instructors are great and you don't even feel like exercising. In these classes, everyone is a circus acrobat, even if you're a beginner. Every move is a milestone and every time you achieve better and better moves, you feel like a rock star. We have even had some instructors and students take their aerial act on the road to perform! It's all possible. You can simply be a student who is doing it for exercise, or an aspiring Cirque Du Solei performer.

So give it a try. Our introductory classes are only $15. And, if you decide to purchase a membership immediately after your intro class, we will put the $15 towards a membership. So it's basically free!

Come fly with us!

Private pole lesson

This week, I had the pleasure of teaching a private lesson to a friend who recently set up her own pole room in her house! She has been doing pole for a while, but she needed a little nudge to push her from a beginner dancer to an intermediate dancer. First on the list was a handless invert. Which she got for her first time!!!!

Then we moved on to the baby super man. Go Jenn!!!

Anyway, I'm very proud of her and I can't wait for our next session together.

Privates are always a great way to get one on one help and advice. All of our instructors offer private lessons. So, if you need an extra push, talk to your favorite instructor about setting aside some time to work on those moves that have you stumped. We offer private and semi-private lessons (2-3 people).

Intermediates...doing their thing!

I taught an intermediate class last week at our Midvale studio and it was such a blast. At the end of each class, I like to give the students time to show off their best moves. Here are some of my students favorite moves. Enjoy!

Tip of the week

Pole beginners - When doing your spins, keep your arms stretched high. Try to hang all of your weight vs. trying to lift with your biceps. When you hang from your arms and creat a big "swoop" with your legs, you will enjoy a much smoother and faster spin. I try to make at least three rotations on all of my spins.

For the more advanced pole dancer - When trying a shoulder mount, pull on the pole as if you were trying to throw a 200 lb man over your shoulder. Shoulder mounting is about the arms and abs not about the legs.

Also, when doing any invert, try to avoid springing off of your leg or swinging into an invert. You will get more physical benefits if you use your core and your arms to lift yourself upside down. Momentum and swinging is like training wheels. Once you don't need them anymore, get rid of them and never go back!

Student survey results.

I will be looking over the student survey results in the coming days. Lots of great constructive criticism as well as many compliments. Thank you!

Here are a few fun facts that I learned from the survey:
The favorite class is pole fitness followed by aerial silk

84% of members were satisfied with the services we offer. If I'm a politician, I'm golden. However, I would like to improve upon this number :)

90% of students said they would likely continue their membership once it has expired. That's great!

I asked each participant of the survey to give us some constructive criticism. Here are a few suggestions we received:

"I'd love to see more dance related items for sale(hip scarves, leotards, etc). And more of an emphasis on the other (traditional) dance classes, not just pole."

"I would like to see more advanced level classes for pole and silks. If possible twice a week in Ogden. I also love taking the intermediate silks at Midvale, but having it at 8-9 and then driving back home get me home pretty late. Is there anyway that an intermediate class could be offered at an earlier time on a Tuesday or Thursday?"

"Please bring Wednesday night Kick Boxing back! :)"

"I would like to incorporate more dance into pole. In terms of putting moves together so they flow and general dance etc. Not necessarily routines you feed us, but like "you can do this to transition these moves" and then sometimes say okay everyone put on this song and you all come up with your own freestyle. etc"

I am personally reading every comment and I will do my very best to make the necessary changes that will help make your experience better! You can still weigh in on the student survey. Arrow down and find the origional student survery blog post.

Thank you for your input!!!!

The inside of Blue.

I love watching people as they walk on the sidewalks outside of the studio. People see the word pole fitness on our front doors and their curiosity goes crazy. They will stand out there forever, but never come in. So, for all you curious little cats, here is what Ogden's most risque' dance studio looks like :)

The very exciting and sexy pole room where all the "magic" happens!
(I'm being dramatic)

Lots of seating for those waiting for the next class.

Main dance floor for our more traditional classes (jazz, hip hop, pilates, etc)

Botique for all of your dance clothing needs.

Sin workshops coming!

I am meeting with the best exotic dancer in Utah this week! We are planning a six week workshop with dancer "Sin". Each week workshop students will learn a new exotic dance element. Learn lap dance, how to do super sexy hair and make up, floor work, rails tricks, and more will be covered. I will keep you posted on the details.

This workshop is definately something to get excited about. Lots of exotic dancers are good at what they do, but very rarely do you find a woman who is not only a great dancer, but an amazing and relevant teacher.

I will update you next week on all the details.

One argument....two examples

Arguement #1 - Pole fitness is headed to the olympics:

Argument #2 - Pole fintess will never make it to the olympics (watch the whole thing):

I hope some of you got a good laugh like I did.

Teacher and student pictures are in!

If you got your picture done a few weeks ago during the studio photo shoot, your pictures are on a disc at the Ogden location. Please make a check out to Alicia Ward or bring cash. No credit cards please.

Alicia did such a great job with the photo's.
Below: Jazz instructor Devon Flint.

We have dry hands!

Just got a great big order of dry hands into both the Ogden and Midvale studio's. Grab a bottle before it's gone. These day's, a great big order will last 2-3 days in the lobby before it's sold out :)

Wonderful Wednesdays!

As the owner of the studio, I've noticed that sometimes I get too busy to enjoy the studio and the people who come to class. So tonight, I stepped away from the desk and observed each class and socialized with the students and teachers in them. I was impressed! It reaffirmed that I am needed and lately I've needed to hear and see that.

The studio is a sanctuary and a place for women to be themselves with no judgement and I'm happy that I am a part of their adventure :)

For those who don't know, our belly dancing class is the best! The teacher always comes up with fun choreography and it always seems that the ladies are truly enjoing eachothers company. Check out what they will be working on this month:

I wandered upstairs to see what the beginner students were working on. Most of these girls have only been to 2-3 classes and they are doing fantastic! Keep up the awesome work!!!

I noticed that our Intermediate/Advanced teacher Megan Page was practing the pole move called "recliner". She is trying really hard to gain more back flexibility and I think she is doing great. Here is a picture of her progress this week:

I enjoyed taking time out to mingle with the Wednesday night gals. Thank you for your memberships and friendships!
